Study Abroad Steps

Step 1. Attend a First Steps Session at EAC
So you have attended a First Steps Session at UC Davis. Great. These will be the next steps toward studying abroad.

Step 2.  Get a Passport
You will need a passport (or proof of purchase) to apply for a UC Davis study abroad program. Passports currently have long lead times, so start this step as early as possible.

Step 3. Define Your Goals
Determine your goals for studying abroad.  Important considerations are application deadlines (when do you want to go?), prerequisites for specific programs (what’s your GPA?), academic credit while abroad (do you want to take classes in your major?), housing (does a host family, apartment, or dorm living appeal to you?), program cost (what’s your budget?), and safety and security abroad (where do you want to go?).

Step 4. Get Informed
Check out the EAP, QA, and SA websites for program details (locations, dates, costs, courses, etc.).  Research the host institution or country web pages.  Talk to the EAC peer advisors. Contact students who have already studied in the programs you are interested in - ask the program advisors to put you in touch with these students.

Step 5. Talk to Your Advisors
Your staff and/or faculty departmental advisor can help you determine the courses you will take abroad—and can also recommend classes that will satisfy major/minor requirements.  If you study on an EAP program, your advisor must sign your Academic Planning form.  If you have questions about general education or language requirements, make an appointment to see an academic advisor in the Dean’s Office of the college where your major is located.
EAC advisors are familiar with many aspects of your study abroad program and can guide you through the process from application to pre-departure preparation to re-entry.  You are expected to meet with the appropriate program advisor to help choose a suitable program.  EAC advisors can help you successfully integrate your experience abroad with your studies at UC Davis.

Step 6. Choose a Program
Choosing a program is the most difficult part of the process.  Once you have narrowed down your choices, rank them.  In some cases, it is possible to apply to (or list) more than one program on your application.  If you are having trouble selecting just one program, speak to your program advisor for guidance on what to do.  You may be able to go abroad multiple times!

Step 7. Apply Early!
All EAC programs accept applications on a first-come first-served basis, so it is to your advantage to get your application in as early as possible.  Remember that if letters of recommendation are required, it is important to give those you ask to write a letter reasonable lead time.

Step 8.  Financial Planning
Now is the time to apply for scholarships and look into financial aid.  Attend a Money Matters Session hosted at the EAC. Click here for details.

Step 9. Complete Additional Forms
In some cases, you may be required to complete additional documents and forms after applying to, but before being completely enrolled in the program (e.g., Health Clearance Form, Audio/Visual Release form, etc.).

Step 10. Attend Pre-Departure Orientations
It is imperative that you attend the mandatory pre-departure orientation(s).  Here you will receive program guidebooks and important program information such as program fees, insurance, course details, housing assignments, etc.

Step 11. Purchase Airline Ticket
We encourage everyone to wait before purchasing an airline ticket until receiving instructions to do so.  In some cases, there are specific routes students must take to get to their destination.

Step 12. Go Abroad!
Go on!  Explore!  Enjoy the incredible adventure.
