Credit for General Education (GE) Requirements

head sculptureAre you looking to fulfill a General Education (GE) requirement with coursework taken overseas? That process can be simple or complex, depending upon your situation. Before we start with the details, let’s take a second to review the General Education requirements on campus. Designed to promote the intellectual growth of all undergraduates, the GE requirement ensures that students take a variety of coursework outside of their chosen major. For more details about the GE, visit http://ge.ucdavis.edu.

UC Davis Summer Abroad and Quarter Abroad courses are regular UC Davis courses taught abroad; consult the General Catalog to see if a course fulfills a General Education requirement.

If you participated on the EAP program, you will work with us to petition for GE credit for the coursework you took overseas. The EAC will receive your petition and submit it to the UC Davis Academic Senate Committee on International Studies and Exchanges (CISE), the faculty body vested with the authority to review and grant UC Davis General Education credit for UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) taken at an overseas university. Please note, it often takes 4-8 weeks after you submit your petition to receive a decision on your request.

If you were on a Non-UC Study Abroad Program (NUCSA), and you wish to fulfill GE requirements on your program, you will need to consult with your College Dean’s office prior to your departure to petition your coursework. Your college will have final authority over the approval of your NUCSA coursework for your graduation GE requirements.

Alright, so how do you fulfill GE requirements with EAP coursework? Simply follow the checklist below after you return from your program (You may submit an EAP course description for preliminary approval before you depart, but final approval will be determined upon return from your program and submission of additional materials.)

  • Meet with your major advisor or dean’s office advisor in your college to determine what GE credits you need for your degree.
  • Consult the list of courses already reviewed and approved by CISE.
    • If your course is on this list, you still need to petition your dean’s office advisor to let them know that this course has been approved for GE credit by the CISE committee. Simply take a screenshot of this spreadsheet to your Dean’s office and work with them.
  • If your course is not on this list and you need the GE credit, you will need to petition for approval. Items to consider:
    • What type of course did you take overseas? Where does it fit into the GE requirement? Topical Breadth, Social-Cultural Diversity or Writing Experience?
    • For Topical Breadth – is this class an Arts and Humanities, Science and Engineering or Social Sciences class?
    • For the Writing Experience - Essays must be written in English. You must also provide a copy of the written work with the professor's remarks on it or have the second page of the GE petition signed by the professor before leaving the country.
    • GE courses can only count for your degree if they are taken for a letter grade.
  • Visit EAP Course Catalog, find your courses from abroad and print the one page description for each course you plan to petition.
  • Download petition for GE approval, complete and sign.
  • Copy your syllabus for the class and translate (if needed).
  • Please deliver your petition to your program advisor at the EAC during drop-in hours (10am-12pm M-R) or by setting up and appointment. Bring your syllabi, petition and EAP Course Catalog description with you to your appointment.
