Country of the Month: Italy

The blend of ancient and modern is evident on every street in Italy, from casual cafés and an electric nightlife, to Roman ruins and Renaissance art. From its Mediterranean beaches to its Alpine mountains, Italy vibrates with a special spirit that is reflected in its people, music, and art. The Education Abroad Center offers many programs to Italy. So what are you waiting for? Study abroad in Italy! :)

When considering the many opportunities UC Davis students have to study in Italy, it is helpful to think about what you want to study while in Italy and then find the appropriate program for you:

If you want to learn Italian…

Go to the UC Center in Siena! Learn Italian during the summer (June to August), fall (September to December), or spring (January to May). Siena is a stunningly beautiful medieval city nestled in Tuscany. Field trips, internships, and cultural activities take full advantage of the local surroundings and put you in direct contact with Italian society.

If you already speak Italian and want to be an international student in Italy…

Go on an EAP immersion program in Padova or Bologna and attend one of Italy’s finest universities. Whether in elegant, bicycle-friendly Padova, known for its beautiful outdoor piazzas, or in the culinary mecca of Bologna, you can learn about Italian perspectives in your field of study and deepen your knowledge of the language.

If you want to study economics or business in English at a top university in Italy…

Go to Bocconi University in Milan! Take courses in global economics or international business in English (or Italian) in Milan, the exciting fashion and design capital. Bocconi is recognized as one of Europe's leading institutions in business and economics and is consistently ranking among the top 20 business schools in the world.

If you want to live in Rome, learn about Roman and Italian history and culture in English and study a little bit of Italian as well…

Go to the UC Center in Rome! Participate in the specially-designed “Rome through the Ages” program, which offers courses taught in English on the history, art, architecture, sociology, and anthropology of Rome, the “Eternal City.”

If you want to study in Italy during the summer…

Either go on the UC Center program in Siena to learn the language over the summer (featured above) or go on one of four UC Davis Summer Abroad programs offered in Italy this coming summer. UC Davis Summer Abroad programs offer students short but intense academic courses that are complemented with a wealth of cultural activities. All of the Summer Abroad programs are built around UC Davis courses and are led by UC Davis faculty. All coursework is in English. See the offerings in Italy for this coming summer below:

Program Spotlight: Quarter Abroad in Havana, Cuba

Did you know that UC Davis is one of the only universities in the country that has a study abroad program in Cuba? Take advantage of this unique opportunity to explore and study on an island in the Caribbean that very few Americans ever have a chance to visit. We are sending a group of students to Cuba for one quarter this spring to learn about education. Why education? Did you know that Cuba has the highest literacy rate in the world at 99.8%?! A statistic like that demands investigation!

The Cuban Education and Culture program will begin with an orientation and city tour of Havana. Students will take Upper Division UC Davis courses in Education, including an internship working with children in a Cuban school. Education courses will be taught by UC Davis faculty, and will also include many guest lectures by Cuban faculty sharing their expertise about the Cuban education system. In addition, students will take a course in Spanish language taught by faculty from the Casa de las Americas. All education courses count towards a minor in education, so this is a great program for anyone who thinks they may want to become a teacher down the road!

Students live a residency maintained by the Casa de las Americas, the oldest and most prestigious cultural institution in Latin America and the Caribbean. The residency consists of the two top floors in one of the highest buildings on the Havana waterfront, the famous Malecon, with unobstructed view of the Caribbean Sea.

The application for this program is open now on the Quarter Abroad website. Deadline to apply is December 1, 2009!

Global Citizen Spotlight: Theresa Martinez

Theresa Martinez

My name is Theresa Martinez and I have just returned from an absolutely incredible year abroad studying in Italy at the Università di Padova (40km from Venice). During the course of this past year I have challenged myself to adapt to a new culture, communicate and express myself in a new language, and navigate myself in a new country. I realize that I have grown more independent and humble and I approach situations with new global perspectives and insights. I’m double majoring in International Relations and Italian I was able to study and compare how political and social issues that impact the United States also impact Italy and Europe. By displacing myself from my familiar Californian university surroundings, I had the opportunity to challenge my flexibility, responsibility, and adaptation skills, while simultaneously seeing my own Californian culture from the global and Italian perspective. I immersed myself into the Italian culture by making many close Italian and international friends who have taught me the importance of what it means to enjoy every moment, how to cook and eat with an appreciation for the tastes and flavors, and the art of true relaxation. I want to integrate this passionate “bella vita” culture that I have experienced into my own life. I have grown and learned so much within the past year, and as a result, I am discovering more about who I am and who I can become every day. I truly believe that every student should take this incredible opportunity and challenge them to study abroad. My experiences abroad will continue to inspire me to learn more about our diverse world, and I will take the memories and experiences I have gained from my year abroad in Italy for all of my life.

Scholarship Spotlight: Boren Scholarships

While your financial aid travels with you wherever you go, there are also many scholarships available for study abroad!

The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. For a complete list of countries, click here.

Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. For a complete list of languages, click here.

Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined. NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development , environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.

Where’s Your Bliss – A Forum on Defining Happiness Based on the International Education Experience
Noon to 1 p.m.
Education Abroad Center, Third and A St.

We welcome everyone from the campus and community to come to an hour-long discussion about their definition of happiness. The idea came about because of this year’s Campus Community Book Project 2009 book selection, The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner. Those attending the discussion do not need to read the book in order to participate. We would love to have a broad representation of both UC Davis students who have studied abroad as well as international students currently studying at UC Davis and faculty or staff who have been abroad or are originally from another country. Many people’s definition of happiness changes after they have lived or spent time in another country so it should be a lively discussion!
