Why should you study abroad?

Lizzie“Studying abroad doesn’t change who you are as much as it changes how you see yourself and the world you fit into. By exposing myself to different people, cultures, and ways of life, my awareness and appreciation of diversity has reached a higher level…College is supposed to be the time students “find” themselves, and studying abroad will help you forge your path in life!”
-Lizzie Allen, Scotland

Mirella“My experience provided an entirely new perspective of politics and globalization…I learned so much more than I would have ever learned inside a classroom. In Ghana, I learned so much about the person I am and strive to be both academically and professionally.”
-Mirella Ceja-Orozco, Mexico and Ghana

Zane“Choosing to study abroad is easily the best decision I made in my college career. In the short four years that we have as an undergraduate, I was able to supplement my major studies with the experience of living in a foreign land immensely historically and culturally rich, learn a completely new language, and through it form many deep friendships with people living on the other side of the world.”
-Zane Kang, Germany

The reasons why you should study abroad might be too many to name, but perhaps these words from students who have gone abroad might give you some idea of its tremendous value. For citizens living in an increasingly global society, studying abroad prepares individuals in a way that nothing else could by allowing students to experience first-hand a completely new culture. While fostering such vital qualities as independence, global awareness, and foreign-language & communication skills, studying abroad equips students with what it takes to play a crucial role in the bridging of cultures.

When and Where You Can Go

When to Go:
You have the option of studying for a summer, quarter, semester, or a year abroad, depending on your individual progress in your major and what coursework you plan to complete abroad. There are programs available from as early as your first year in college all the way through to the last quarter of your senior year.

Where to Go:
There are several different study abroad program options you can consider.

The UC Davis Summer Abroad programs are programs taught by UC Davis faculty members over the summer, approximately 4 weeks in length. In 2008, Summer Abroad will offer 38 programs in 30 countries in the subject areas of Engineering; Food & Wine; Globalism & Community Development; Literature & Culture; Performance, Music & Film; and Visual Arts & Art History. A full list of the programs can be found at the Summer Abroad website:
http://summer-abroad.ucdavis.edu/

The UC Davis Quarter Abroad programs are also programs taught by UC Davis faculty members, approximately 10 weeks in length. Quarter Abroad offers programs in Mexico, South Africa, Cuba, Japan, England, Argentina, Italy, and Spain. To see a more detailed list of their programs and/or to apply, visit the Quarter Abroad website:
http://quarterabroad.ucdavis.edu/

The UC Education Abroad Program offers summer, quarter, semester, and year-long immersion programs at 150 host institutions in over 30 countries. Students study at overseas universities alongside the host country’s students. For more information on specific programs, visit their website at:
http://eap.ucop.edu/

If you are interested in EAP and are unsure of where to begin, the Program Wizard is a feature that uses the Coursefinder database (see below) to help you find possible programs of interest. Enter such variables as your major, length of study abroad program you desire, applicable language, etc. and the program will identify several programs that fit your “profile.” Keep in mind that these are only suggested programs. If you have a particular country of interest, or would like more personal information, please visit the Education Abroad Center (EAC) and talk with our student interns or make an appointment to see an advisor.

What Classes to Take

UC Davis Summer Abroad & Quarter Abroad
UC Davis Summer Abroad and UC Davis Quarter Abroad programs allow you to take specific courses directly out of the UC Davis General Catalog abroad, under a UC Davis faculty member. You can find the specific course titles at the Summer Abroad and Quarter Abroad websites.

Education Abroad Program
The UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) gives you a vast number of possibilities to choose from in fulfilling your major or college requirements as you study alongside students of the host country at a host institution (immersion style program).

Your major department has the final authority to determine how your coursework abroad will be used to fulfill specific major requirements, so be sure to consult with your major adviser when you have selected an EAP program and have put together a potential study plan.

There are severable resources available for you when determining your possible coursework abroad:

1. The Coursefinder database: This includes descriptions of all courses taken by UC students while on EAP programs. You may search courses by subject, location, or language of instruction. *Please note that your course selection at a host university is not limited to the courses listed on Coursefinder; Coursefinder is an historical academic record displaying the UC course numbers for each host university. It is to be used simply as a tool to give you an idea of what kinds of courses are offered by the university.

2. Host University Web sites: Review the information online to understand what coursework can be taken abroad. Links to these websites can be found on the EAP country page: http://eap.ucop.edu/eap/country

3. At the EAC: There is a wide collection of host university catalogs and materials available for you at the Education Abroad Center. Feel free to come by our office and browse over these resources.

To get started on planning your EAP study abroad experience, review the recommended study plan on the EAC Web site: http://eac.ucdavis.edu/eac/studyplan.cfm. Also, begin your academic planning for graduation to include study abroad!

Financing Your Study Abroad Experience

A wide variety of scholarships and financial aid are available for you. Information on how to finance your study abroad experience can be found at the EAC website (under ‘Resources,’ then ‘Finances’). Or, simply click on the following link:

How to Get Started
Not sure where to begin? Come to a First Steps Workshop, offered every day at the EAC - we strongly recommend you attend one if you have an interest in study abroad opportunities. These 1/2 hour sessions are designed to help you explore your options for studying abroad and provide tools to plan for a successful program abroad. Topics range from types of study abroad programs, financial planning, academic planning, to getting in touch with returning participants.

  • Mondays: 2 p.m.
  • Tuesdays: 2:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 10 a.m.
  • Thursdays: 1:30 p.m.
  • Fridays: 11:00 a.m.

What better place to prepare world citizens, people who can see bridges instead of boundaries, than our colleges and universities? I hope that global perspective will eventually permeate our curriculum and our discussions and that the day will come when all of our students will be able to have an experience in another culture.
-Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef
