Why Study Abroad
The Education Abroad Center offers a rich diversity of options for English majors. Whether students opt to participate in programs that offer foreign language proficiency or programs in English language literature, they will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture and history of older societies. Students can fulfill requirements in the major while experiencing the richness of other cultures. The English Department strongly encourages students to study abroad, whether for a summer, a quarter, or a full academic year.
When to Study Abroad
Study abroad programs are available at all class levels (some as early as 3rd quarter first year all the way through to the last quarter of the senior year). The particular quarter, semester, summer or year that you study abroad depends on your individual progress in the major, what coursework you plan to complete abroad, and your immediate plans after graduation. Consult with your major advisor to determine the best time period for your study abroad experience.
Where to go:
Looking at UC/UC Davis-run programs, you have over 40 locations from which to choose (and over 100 different program options in those countries). Some offer only intensive language and culture programs, others "set" courses which may or may not fit your major. The majority allow you to choose from regular host university course choices (offered in English or the host country language). The best way to choose is to look over the options and consult with the Education Abroad Center advisors and your major advisor.

In addition, the UC Education Abroad Program offers two special features to help you choose: the Coursefinder database and the Program Wizard.
All classes taken on the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) are listed individually with their accompanying grades on your UC Davis transcript. The courses are UC approved courses and count toward your 180 unit requirement for graduation; however, your major has the final authority to determine how the coursework is used to fulfill specific major requirements.
The English major has determined that EAP courses may be used to fulfill the following major requirements:
| Preparatory Subject Matter: | Possibly taken abroad. |
| Upper Division Core Requirements AND Upper Division Depth Subject Matter (Emphasis) | May use EAP courses to satisfy up to 24 units of upper division course work towards the major. |
Students must submit course descriptions prior to departure for preliminary approval and must submit course syllabi, descriptions, and possibly student work upon return to UC Davis for final approval.
