Why Study Abroad
The Education Abroad Program offers a rich diversity of options for Community and Regional Development majors. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the cultural richness of other countries, while gaining valuable knowledge about community problems and developmental strategies abroad. The Community and Regional Development Major strongly encourages students to study abroad and take advantage of the opportunities and learning experience that are a lifelong gift. By studying abroad, students can gain a stronger understanding of how culture and ethnicity shape other nations and impact community life.
When to Study Abroad
Study abroad programs are available at all class levels (some as early as 3rd quarter first year all the way through to the last quarter of the senior year). The particular quarter, semester, summer or year that you study abroad depends on your individual progress in the major, what coursework you plan to complete abroad, and your immediate plans after graduation. Due to the flexibility of the Community and Regional Development Major, it is best to consult with your major advisor to determine the optimal time period for studying abroad. (Please note that if you plan to study abroad your senior year, it is vital that you consult with your major advisor to ensure that you will be in compliance with all University residency requirements.)
Where to go:
Community and Regional Development students have the opportunity to study in any of the various programs that the Education Abroad Program offers. Whether students opt to go to Barbados, Germany, Japan, or Spain, they will gain a valuable experience that will enhance not only their undergraduate career at UC Davis, but enhance their experiences and interactions in the professional world.
What classes to take
Coursework taken on the UC Davis Quarter Abroad and the UC Davis Summer Abroad programs are regular UC Davis courses and fulfill major and college and university requirements just as they would as if they had been taken while on residence on campus. Be sure to consult the UC Davis General Catalog for specifics.
All classes taken on the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) are listed individually with their accompanying grades on your UC Davis transcript. The courses are UC approved courses and count toward your 180 unit requirement for graduation; however, your major has the final authority to determine how the coursework is used to fulfill specific major requirements.
| Preparatory Subject Matter: | Possibly taken abroad |
| Depth Subject Matter and Upper Division Core Requirements as well as Electives: | May use EAP courses to satisfy up to 24 units of upper division course work toward the major. |
Students must submit course descriptions prior to departure for preliminary approval and must submit course syllabi, descriptions, and student work (including written papers and exams) upon return to UC Davis for final approval.
