Health Advisory for Hepatitis B Vaccination

It is advisable that you print out these instructions and bring them with you to your medical clearance appointments.

(For EAP applicants going to Brazil, China (PRC), Egypt, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam.)

A hepatitis B vaccination is strongly recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the EAP system wide medical consultant, for all participants in the Education Abroad Programs listed above, and highly recommended for others planning to do extensive travel. Hepatitis B is more infectious than the AIDS virus and is more easily spread by person-to-person contact. Please refer to the International Travel Health Guide and the CDC Health Information for International Travel for more information.

The vaccination takes 6 months to administer. You should begin your vaccinations immediately in order to complete the schedule before departure.

The cost of the three vaccinations will vary from campus to campus.

In the event that you are unable to begin the vaccination series 6 months before your departure, it is recommended that you take advantage of the Engerix-B vaccine because, in addition to the standard vaccination schedule of 0, 1 and 6 months, this vaccine has been licensed for an accelerated schedule of 0, 1, 2 and 12 months. The latter schedule helps those students leaving the country before 6 months, but adds the cost of a fourth dose. The Centers for Disease Control recently approved an alternative accelerated schedule of 0, 2, and 4 months. This schedule does not require a fourth dose.
