Course Planning for EAP

At the Time of Application

  1. Use your four-year study plan developed with your Major advisor to map out the courses you will need to take at the time you would like to study abroad.
  2. When completing the EAP Academic Planning Form (APF), use Coursefinder, the host University Web site, and Course Catalogs (at the EAC) to find courses that appear similar to the courses you need to complete your degree.  Copy/print these course descriptions.
  3. Be sure to check the EAC Major Advising Pages as we have compiled lists of historically approved courses specific to EAP countries and universities.
  4. Create a list of overseas courses both preferred and alternate that you would like to take and bring the course description with you to meet with your academic advisor.
  5. Meet with your major advisor to review your Academic Planning Form (APF) and to have it signed.  At this meeting, find out your departmental restrictions (if any) for study abroad coursework.  Also ask if the department maintains a list of approved overseas coursework that is not posted on the EAC Web site.
  6. It is likely that your departmental advisor will not “pre-approve” your overseas coursework, however, if you bring the catalog description of the course and you discuss each course with your advisor, they will be able to give you an idea of what the courses may fulfill.

WHILE ON EAP

  1. Use the Student Course Information Form (SCIF) to ensure you bring home all critical course materials for which you plan to petition for major, minor or GE credit.
  2. Historically approved courses may be available on your Major Advising Page and this will make your petition process a bit easier.
  3. If you need to have your host university course approved at the beginning of your studies abroad, you will need to send via email or fax the SCIF information to your major advisor at UC Davis.  Keep in mind that you may need to pre-arrange this exchange of information.  Ideally, you and your advisor (or UCD professor) could determine your course equivalency before the overseas drop/add deadline.

Upon Return to UC Davis

  1. Schedule an appointment with your major advisor to request a review of the class materials that you’ve saved. It’s a good idea to do this as soon as possible, so as to determine which courses abroad count for your major.
  2. Grades for EAP returnees will not be available until the end of the quarter after your return. The process is lengthy - grades are received from the Study Centers by the EAP main office in Santa Barbara (UOEAP) where they are processed and sent to each UC campus. If your grades are not posted to your transcript by this time, please make an appointment with your EAP advisor.
