Academic Planning For Study Abroad
PART I – determine how you can take major coursework overseas
- Decide on a study abroad program
- Meet with your major advisor(s) to work out a four-year study plan (pdf)
- Talk to your advisor about your study abroad program
- Bring in program information - dates, length, university info, etc.
- Determine the best time to study abroad for your major/degree progress
- Determine what classes from your major/minor/GE/College requirements can be taken on your study abroad program to fulfill your degree requirements
- Discuss with your major advisor(s) academic details for studying abroad
- Ask your advisor about any departmental restrictions on coursework – i.e. -limit to the number of units taken abroad, core requirements, electives, area studies, sequence courses, etc.
- Ask if your department already has a list of courses taken abroad by other UCD students in the major
- Determine the process for petitioning coursework taken abroad-whether it is pre-departure, while you are abroad or after you return
PART II – The application process
- Research your academic plan
- Identify 6-8 classes per semester of study to take at the host university
- Using internet resources and your four-year study plan, find out more about the classes abroad and determine equivalency to UCD classes
- Use host university web site, Coursefinder (EAP only), program information and UCD catalog (QA and SA) to determine course content
- Complete your Academic Planning Form (APF)
- Rearrange your coursework as necessary to accommodate BOTH things: the courses you need to take for your major/minor AND the courses you are able to take on your study abroad program.
